We are Tawasol. We work in Ezbet Khairallah, one of Cairo’s largest slum communities.
From the beginning, we believed that if you want to change the future of a community, you start with its children. So we started with a school. A place where children could learn, feel safe, and have access to education.
But very quickly, we learned something important. Education alone is not enough.
You cannot expect a child to focus in school if their home is struggling to survive. Many families were dealing with unstable income, long working hours, and daily challenges that made education feel like a luxury.
So we understood that development has to be holistic.
We saw that the mother is the heart of the household. When she is supported, the entire family feels it. So we created
vocational programs for mothers. We taught handicraft and practical skills that could generate real income. Not as charity, and not as temporary support, but as long-term work.
The products these women make are sold through our shop. The income goes directly back into the school and the programs. This created a simple system where commerce supports education, and education supports families.
As the work grew, we realised that fathers also needed opportunities. So we expanded vocational programs for men. Woodworking, technical skills, and practical training that help bring stability and dignity back into the home.
At the same time, we invested in culture.
We created performing arts programs for children and youth. Acrobatics, movement, dance, and physical theatre. These programs help build confidence, discipline, and self expression. They also create real pathways for young people to perform, travel, and be seen.
Today, these performances are shared through live shows and community events. In the future, we hope to build the Tawasol Circus and Acrobatics Theatre. A permanent space where our youth perform, where audiences come, and where culture becomes a bridge between the community and the wider world.
We also developed the Tawasol Wellness Club. A real space for youth health and wellbeing. A place for sports, movement, and community life. Football courts, basketball courts, playgrounds, and green spaces.
Beyond people, we also looked at place.
Within Ezbet Khairallah is the historic Gabakhana, a site where Muhammad Ali once stored gunpowder. Today, we are working to restore it as a cultural experiential space. A place where history, community, and everyday life meet.
Today, Tawasol is not a single project. It is not one program. It is a system built with the community.
We educate youth. We support families. We create opportunities. And we reinvest everything back into the place we work in. That is Tawasol.
